Ontario Masters Racing Team gears up for Worlds Print

With the Masters Worlds in Halifax this year, a group of Ontario masters have banded together to form the Ontario Masters Racing Team. Comprised of 14 Laser sailors from Ottawa, Newmarket, Toronto and Peterborough, the team has established five clinics across the province through the summer in the lead up to the Masters Worlds where 26 sailors from Ontario are expected to race.

“Interest in the team has been extraordinary,” says team captain Rob Koci. “The guys are very keen. The Ontario Sailing Association (OSA) was on board right away. There is a real buzz throughout the Ontario sailing scene about us.”

The team will start its campaign at the North American Masters in Wrightsville Beach where at least 10 members expect to warm up their sea legs after a long winter. The first team clinic, conducted by one of Canada’s top Laser sailors, David Wright, will take place in Toronto May 9-10 at the Water Rats. Subsequent clinics will be held at Buffalo Canoe Club (the weekend before the North American Open), Sturgeon Lake and Kingston Yacht Club.

All the clinics are free to members, but if attendance is less than 10 for a clinic, the team will open the clinic to others. “We want to make the team a regular part of the Ontario Laser landscape, and it’s a good way for non-members to get to know us if they think they want to get involved in the future,” says Koci.

The clinic series will culminate in Kingston, Ontario on August 15 and 16, where coach Chris Cook, fourth in the Finn class at the Bejing Olympics, will help the team make final preparations before heading to Halifax. “The goal I set myself for this year was to be able to say on the last day of racing in Halifax, as I am packing up my boat, that I did everything I could possibly do to win,” says Koci. “I believe the entire team will be able to say the same thing by the time we are done. I can’t think of a better way to approach a championship.”
