Is there anything our North American Masters sailors can't do well? Great article in Sailing World about our very own Peter Seidenberg, written by Joe Berkeley with photos by Peter Hurley.  One call does it all! See it here.

The 2006 Canadian Masters Championship was sailed this past weekend on Lake Ontario, hosted by the Port Credit Yacht Club, with 32 competitors from Canada and the US..

The 2006 Laser Canadian Masters started on Friday, September 1 with east winds of 12 knots and waves on Lake Ontario off Port Credit Yacht Club about 3-4 feet in height. The first race saw a broken mast before the start and a few "adjustments" for all to the big rollers.

In the second race the wind piped up to over 21 knots and held at an average of 18-20 in building seas for the remainder of the racing on that day. Four races in all that saw a lot of masters feeling fatigued. Several had to be assisted to right their boats but all were able to sail into the harbour and enjoy the ambience of the host club.

Port Credit Yacht Club put on a Band and a BBQ on Friday evening that was exceptional. Steak and Salmon with all the trimmings together with the camaraderie allowed everyone to leave with a good feeling and some apprehension for the racing on Saturday.

Saturday brought "Ernesto" to the lake and the forecast warned of "gale force" winds along the Lakeshore. The Race Committee Chair, Pat Lymburner, sent a mark boat out three times to test the conditions and found the waves to be between 4-6 feet and winds at 21 knots and above. After a two hour delay, he decided to abandon racing for Saturday, a move that was readily accepted by all.

The PCYC staff rushed the planned BBQ into the early afternoon and a great feast was had by all in a buffet style setting with lots of food and more good tall "tales" from the sailors.

Sunday saw the Lake looking a lot friendlier and hopes were high. The winds were 10-12 knots from the northeast and the sea state was much calmer although the rollers were still there.

Race 5 got underway after a two minute delay to allow competitors to get to the starting area. The winds were "fluky" and the sailors had a difficult time watching for shifts.

Race 6 got underway with the same conditions but a dying wind down to 8 knots. The wind continued to soften and the Race Committee decided to shorten the race at the second windward rounding.

The wait for the wind went for two hours and then the RC posted 'AP' over "H" taking the fleet into harbour. There it was decided to end the regatta at 6 races.

Andy Roy walked away with the Championship but not until Morten Fogh had served notice that he intends to get to the top as soon as possible. Both these sailors won their respective divisions with the Grand Master Division going to Alan Lathrop and the Great Grand Master belonging to Denys Deschambeault.

Sally Sharp and Tanya Wharton were first and second woman in the event with Julie Hughes making her debut in the Laser a memorable one finishing third.

This years Masters highlighted the importance of supporting the Masters concept in the Laser Class. The boat and its various rigs were given a great test and the sailors had a great time. The competitors were from four provinces, Great Britain and the US. All in all, a wonderful event.
